The Fern Planter is a hand-carved terracotta pot in which the motif and the material are given equal weight. Across the rounded body, fern fronds are incised directly into the clay — each leaf rendered with fine, precise strokes that follow the natural arc of the frond from stem to tip. The carving is filled with a muted teal, applied by hand into the grooves, so the colour sits recessed within the surface rather than sitting on top of it. The result is restrained: the terracotta reads first, the teal emerges on closer looking.

The form beneath the carving is generous and low — a wide, bowl-like body that sits close to the ground and offers good soil volume for the size. The rim is thick and smooth, a deliberate contrast to the worked surface below it. The base tapers slightly, giving the pot a settled, grounded quality whether placed singly or in a group.

Each pot in the set of three carries the same fern motif scaled to its size — the fronds proportioned to the body so the carving feels neither crowded nor sparse at any scale. Together, the three sizes create a composed grouping. Individually, each holds its own.

The combination of unglazed terracotta and hand-applied teal has a particular quality in direct sunlight — the warm orange of the clay and the cool green of the inlay shift slightly depending on the light and time of day. Photographed here in morning shadow, the two tones are at their most distinct.

Suited to outdoor steps, covered terraces, and interior spaces with strong natural light. Works well with trailing ferns, pothos, or any plant whose foliage echoes the carved motif.

Care & Placement
Indoor and covered outdoor only. Raw unglazed terracotta is porous — avoid direct rain and standing water as prolonged moisture will mark and weather the body. The teal inlay is hand-painted and not sealed; keep away from direct harsh sunlight which may fade the colour over time. Clean with a dry cloth only — do not use water on the body surface. Single base drainage hole. Always use a saucer or tray indoors.

Beena’s Curating Tips

A Boston Fern in the Fern planter is the composition Beena returns to first — living fronds above carved fronds below, the same botanical line rendered twice in two completely different materials. It requires no additional styling and explains itself immediately.

The raw terracotta body will develop a natural patina over time — slight darkening at the base, subtle weathering at the rim. This is not deterioration; it is the material finding its age. Embrace it. A Fern planter that has been lived with for a year is more beautiful than a new one.

Choose plants with cool green or deep foliage for Fern — the warm orange-red clay provides all the warmth the composition needs. Blush, pink, or warm-toned plants can compete with the body colour; cool greens and deep teals resolve naturally against it.

The teal inlay connects Fern to the broader Midori palette — it reads as a deliberate colour choice, not a default. Style Fern with teal, green, or natural accessories in the same space to extend the colour conversation beyond the planter itself.

Fern is the most outdoor-ready piece in the Midori range for covered spaces — the raw terracotta body belongs in a garden context in a way that painted or glazed pieces don’t. A covered verandah, a shaded patio corner, a garden step — these are Fern’s natural habitats.

The trio — Large, Medium, Small — staggered on a covered patio or verandah step reads as a curated garden installation. Vary the plants across sizes: Areca Palm in the Large, a Boston Fern in the Medium, Spider Plant trailing from the Small.
