The French Anduze Planter ( the classical French garden urn form, originating in the town of Anduze in southern France in the 17th century; a form that has been in continuous use for over three hundred years) takes one of the most enduring forms in the history of garden design and renders it in aged, weathered stone-finish ceramic. The silhouette is immediately recognisable,  it is a form that has stood in the gardens of European châteaux, monastery courtyards, and colonial verandahs for centuries, and it carries that history quietly in its proportions.

The finish here is the work. The surface is treated to resemble aged limestone or weathered render — pale, chalky, and uneven, with patches of grey, moss-green, and raw clay showing through where the finish has worn or been abraded. Mineral deposits, hairline cracks, and tonal variation are all present in the surface, not as damage but as intention. The pot looks as though it has been standing in a garden for a long time. This is not a pot that announces itself as new.

The swag detail — a raised, twisted rope of clay applied to the upper body — is the form’s defining classical element. Here it is rendered without gilding or embellishment, simply modelled in the same material as the body and aged to the same tone. In the smaller sizes, the swag is proportionally compact; in the large, it sweeps with more presence. Each size carries the Midori studio mark, applied discreetly as a small pressed medallion.

The pedestal foot lifts the body off the ground, creating a shadow line beneath the pot and giving it a formality that flat-based planters do not possess. This makes the Anduze particularly well suited to symmetrical placements — flanking an entrance, a doorway, or the top or bottom of a stair flight — as well as to solo placement as a considered focal point in a garden composition.

Comes with a drain at the base.  A note on character: The French Anduze is finished and aged to replicate the weathered patina of a centuries-old garden urn. Surface crazing, fine cracks, and uneven colour distribution are inherent to this finish — not defects. Each piece is individual. The patina will continue to develop outdoors with exposure to rain and light, which only deepens the authenticity of the form.

Beena’s styling notes

The Anduze has been standing in French gardens since the 17th century. Beena didn’t reinvent it — she curated it, because some forms are already perfect. The footed pedestal, the rope-swag relief, the wide flared mouth: these are not decorative choices, they are a design language that has earned its place over four centuries of garden making.

Place the large Anduze where it can be seen from a distance — at the end of a garden path, flanking an entrance gate, anchoring a covered terrace, or standing alone on a garden landing as a statement that needs no explanation. Plant it generously: Bougainvillea that spills over the rim, a large Agapanthus in full flower, a clipped Bay Laurel for a formal read, or a Bird of Paradise for a tropical one. The chalky limestone finish weathers further outdoors — moss will find the crevices, rain will deepen the patina — and it will only become more itself with time.

The medium works on a covered verandah or garden step as shown — planted with something that echoes the verticality of the form: a tall ornamental grass, a slender Dracaena, or flowering Salvia. The small is a desk or console piece in a room that takes itself seriously — a single rosemary plant, a trailing Ivy, or left empty on a bookshelf where it reads as sculpture.

A trio in descending sizes on stone or granite steps, as Beena has placed them here, is one of the oldest garden compositions in the world. It works because it has always worked.
