The Old Boot Planter does not take itself too seriously — and that is precisely its charm. Cast in ceramic in the form of a well-worn lace-up boot, it carries the creases, curves, and proportions of something long-used: a rounded toe, a low heel, a collar wide enough to plant generously into. The form is rendered with enough detail to be convincing — stitching lines at the collar, the suggestion of sole and heel — but softened into something more sculptural than literal.

The surface is finished in the same spirit as the form: layers of black, warm sand, and muted olive-green are worked and abraded across the body, pooling in the creases and fading across the raised surfaces. The result reads like genuine age — a boot that has been left out through several seasons, taken on colour from soil and weather and time.

As a planter, it is surprisingly versatile. The wide opening suits trailing specimens particularly well — a string of pearls or donkey tail cascading over the collar and down the side of the boot is a natural pairing, as shown. But compact succulents, small ferns, or a single sculptural cactus work equally well.

A piece for a windowsill, a garden shelf, an outdoor table, or anywhere a considered touch of wit is welcome.

Beena’s styling note
The Boot doesn’t need help — but it rewards the right plant. Fill it with something that spills and wanders: a loose mix of Osteospermum, Baby’s Breath, and trailing Alyssum in blush pinks and white will do exactly what the image shows — a garden that arrived uninvited and decided to stay. Avoid anything upright or architectural; a single Sansevieria in a boot is a contradiction in terms. This piece belongs on a weathered wooden bench, a garden step, a low stone wall, or a window ledge where morning light catches the distressed charcoal finish. Indoors, place it on a console table or kitchen shelf planted with trailing Ivy or String of Pearls — the contrast between the worn antique boot and the living cascade is the entire composition. One Boot is charming. Two Boots side by side on a garden step, planted with matching wildflowers, is a full stop.
