Collar makes its argument in a single band.

Below the shoulder, the body is entirely raw terracotta — smooth, unadorned, the warm orange-red clay left exactly as it came from the kiln. Nothing interrupts it. Then, at the upper collar, a precise geometric grid is pressed into the clay and filled with white The line between the grid and the plain clay below is clean and deliberate. Above it: pattern. Below it: earth. The two never negotiate.

The form amplifies this argument — a wide, generous bowl that tapers toward a rounded base, letting the collar sit at the widest point and read from every angle. The Large at 38cm holds a substantial plant with ease; the collar remains visible above the soil line, doing its quiet work even when the bowl is fully planted. The Small at 19cm is compact enough for a windowsill, carrying the same two-register composition at a scale that rewards close attention.

Each Collar is individually made. Variation in grid density, white intensity, and the transition line between collar and body is inherent to the craft — it is the character of the piece.

Care & Placement
Indoor and covered outdoor only. Raw unglazed terracotta is porous — avoid direct rain and standing water. The white grid is applied to the collar zone only; do not scrub or apply water to this area as it may affect the white over time. Clean the body with a dry cloth only. Single base drainage hole. Use a saucer indoors.

Beena’s Curating Tips

Collar is the most architecturally precise piece in the Argil Collection — the clean line between the white grid and the raw clay below is a design decision that rewards looking at closely. Place it where that transition can be seen from a comfortable viewing distance — a console, a step, a table surface.

White plants above the white collar is the composition Beena returns to first — Peace Lily or White Anthurium rising above the grid creates a vertical white line from collar to bloom that reads as completely intentional. Nothing else is needed in the frame.

The Large and Medium share the same 38cm diameter — the difference is height. The Large is the statement floor piece; the Medium sits lower and wider on a surface. Use the Large where vertical presence matters, the Medium where horizontal spread is the priority.

The Small at 19cm is Collar’s most precise piece — compact enough for a desk or windowsill, the grid collar proportionally larger relative to the body, making the design argument more concentrated. A single Sansevieria ‘Moonshine’ in the Small Collar on a white desk is the most resolved small-scale composition in the Argil range.

Collar and Bail in the same space — both smooth raw clay bodies, both with a single defining detail at the rim zone — create a quiet dialogue between two of Argil’s most restrained pieces. Bail’s jute handles and Collar’s white grid are completely different in character but identical in their economy.
